the problem
The client needs to recruit and hire 2000 new employees for their technical team this year. They are not happy with the quality or quantity of hires they currently are getting. Some of the hiring managers and recruiters, especially those who have been with the company since it started in the late 90’s came out of the technical team and have a good grasp of the technical aspects of the positions they are hiring for. The newer additions to the team usually have more of a background in HR, with less in depth understanding of the technical material. The average age of the recruiters is 35, and they are distributed all over the US. Right now, the training does not offer much in the area of non-technical training, other than compliance training. That compliance training is not engaging, and needs to be more interesting.
the solution
All companies need to hire people from time to time. However, how candidates are interviewed is often an afterthought. To hire the best people, there should be an interviewing strategy in place. Interviewing done right is hard work, thus the company identified the need for this training.
My role was to design and develop an eLearning course that allows learners to make choices during real-life interview scenarios in which they interact with the content and receive feedback. After making choices, they would see the consequences of their choices in a low-risk setting.
The process
I designed this scenario-based eLearning course by applying a combination of my own experience and source content with needs analysis from stakeholders and SMEs. I wrote design document followed by PowerPoint storyboard to create the visual mockup. Then, developed scenario-based learning in Articulate Storyline 360 incorporating gamification. It was important for this project to let the learners decide on their own choices to help facilitate real-world behavior change. I put the learner in the center of the learning experience by providing the character and asking to make decisions. I gave the learner a sense of autonomy and control which results in full engagement in the story.
the result
The fully developed product was well received by my mentors and peers. Many noted how visually pleasing the design was and how engaging the interactions and questions were. Ultimately, I learned that these type of interactive trainings provide useful and engaging content that leads to learners behavior change.
I am confident that my instructional design skills and eLearning development skillsets will allow me to work on my future projects that can help people learn in meaningful ways.
